(Reflex Action)

(Reflex Arc)

Responses like these too
Reflex  action:
It is a spontaneous and involuntary action in response to a stimulus.
Examples of reflex actions

  • Sudden withdrawing of the hand when one touches a hot object.
  • Shutting the eyes when bright light falls on the eyes.
  • Jumping suddenly when one steps on a round and slimy object.

Reflex arc
The path of impulses in a reflex action.
Need for reflex actions
Reflex actions take place without the involvement  of the cerebrum. So they  take place  without our  knowledge . It is a device  to save the body from situations  that may lead to danger. By the time we  think, decide  and implement, the incident will have happened. So sudden actions are required under such circumstances. Reflexes are such actions.
The three divisions of the nervous system

  • Central nervous system (CNS) - Parts : Brain, Spinal cord.
  • Autonomous nervous system - The part of the nervous system outside the CNS, that regulates the functions of the internal organs.
  • Peripheral nervous system - The nerves that join the body parts with the CNS and carry impulses to and from the CNS.
Autonomous nervous system
  • Sympathetic system: Consists of the chain of ganglia on both the sides of the vertebral column and the nerve centres associated with it.
  • Parasympathetic system: Consists of the nerves arising from  the brain and the  lower part of the  spinal cord.

Functions of sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.
